Where do you Purchase your Contact Lenses?

Until recently, I had no idea how much I have been overpaying for my contact lenses. I pay about $4/month for PSP eye insurance through my wife’s employer, which is one of the most common eye insurers. Like many plans, ours allows each of us about $120 a year that can either go towards contacts or frames. Because I already feel like I’m getting a deal with our insurance, I have never paid close attention to the cost of our contacts.

Common for Eye Doctors to Mark-Up Inventory
I remember from my last visit to the eye doctor that I wrote a check for about $120 for a years worth of contacts (about $240 coupled with our insurance). So this year, I decided to check online to see how the prices compare to that of my overpriced doctor. Sure enough, my eye doctor marks-up the contacts over 100%! Can you believe that? He is taking the insurance money and charging customers the exact amount on the top. It’s no doubt he is buying in bulk for cheaper than I can get from lens.com or 1-800-contacts, which makes it even worse.

After a few more calls to local offices, I have found that it is not uncommon for doctors to overcharge like this. All in all, ordering online saved me over $100, a savings that represents a significant chunk of our monthly food budget.

Keep my experience in mind the next time you are shopping for eye-wear. Don’t get blindsided with overpriced vision. $
