Gas Could Be Worse

4 bucks for gasI got this in an email some time ago and I am such a pack rat, I still have it. Does anyone ever keep forwards besides me? The reason why I am bringing it up now is because it reminded me of the article I wrote a few days ago. That article reflected the extreme differences in cost when looking at volume per price and shown below is geared towards showing what gas is like when compared to other fluids we buy without batting an eye. (I didn’t mean to make that rhyme.)

I have no idea who to credit for this list and cannot vouch for its accuracy, although I think its close enough to make a point. Here is a refresher, in case you aren’t able to click over to the other article ;-)

Faucet Filter – $34.95 and the cost per gallon is 25¢ per gallon.
Pitcher Filter – $24.95 and the cost per gallon is 20¢ per gallon.
(There are 128 fluid ounces in 1 gallon)

Start Email Forward===================================
Think a gallon of gas is expensive?

This makes one think, and also puts things in perspective.

Diet Snapple 16 oz $1.29 …….. $10.32 per gallon

Lipton Ice Tea 16 oz $1.19 ………..$9.52 per gallon

Gatorade 20 oz $1.59 …… $10.17 per gallon

Ocean Spray 16 oz $1.25 …. $10.00 per gallon

Brake Fluid 12 oz $3.15 …. $33.60 per gallon

Vick’s Nyquil 6 oz $8.35 …. $178.13 per gallon

Pepto Bismol 4 oz $3.85 ….. $123.20 per gallon

Whiteout 7 oz $1.39 ……… .. $25.42 per gallon

Scope 1.5 oz $0.99 ….$84.48 per gallon

And this is the REAL KICKER…

Evian water 9 oz $1.49……….$21.19 per gallon?!
$21.19 for WATER

And the buyers don’t even know the source. (Evian spelled backwards is
Naive.)

So, the next time you’re at the pump, be glad your car doesn’t run on
water, Scope, or Whiteout, or God forbid Pepto Bismol or Nyquil.
===================================End Email Forward

Not a bad little tid-bit of info huh? Suddenly gas doesn’t seem quite so outrageous. I am not advocating the price escalation at all, and would love for gas to go back to $1, so be gentle with all your comments. I think that what really gets people is not necessarily the increase in price but the rate at which that increase occurs, and for what reasons. Those “reasons” could probably generate a whole website on its own…anyone know of one? I am curious about the ins-and-outs of that mess.

What items can you think of that are surprisingly expensive when looked at in volume? Alcohol has to be somewhere on this list…

And like I always tell people…try pouring a can of Coca Cola in your gas tank and see how far you can go! A gallon gasoline can power a 2,000lb. vehicle for over twenty miles. Pretty cheap when you think of it that way.

I know it could be worse, but still…
Does that sign above the gas price sign say “Happy Cookie”?
