Lately, as we get closer and closer to becoming homeowners, I have become obsessed with all the little taxes, fees and surcharges that go along with it.  While I could probably sit down and start writing about all the little details I have found out so far, I would no longer have time to do anything else with my life.  But, I figured it would be good to provide an overview of some taxes and fees that apply to just about everyone.

We all have to pay taxes, whether its property taxes, gasoline tax or simply income tax, it has to be paid.  In any case, its a good idea to know how much you are paying.  Retirement Living has a nice list that breaks down all of the little taxes we pay in each state.  Find yours below and check them out!

in Michigan we seem to have a fairly average sales tax (6%)…but Florida has the same sales tax and 0% personal income tax, whereas our personal income tax is 4.35%. Kind of interesting. Also, we have a pretty high tax on cigarettes at $2 per 20pk carton! I saw some states as low as 7 cents per pack (South Carolina). I’m not a smoker so it doesn’t really matter to me, but it’s interesting to compare the differing states!

@ Tiffanie: I was amazed when I started plowing through all these different state taxes as well. I realize that most people are probably kind of put off by the word “taxes” but we think its pretty important to know where your money goes. I think South Carolina has taken over the lead for tobacco production from Virginia so thats why they might be getting a bit of a break for smokes. They are still pretty cheap here though I guess.
