Stop Paying the Pet Groomer

When my wife and I first got our Maltese puppy 2 years ago, we were shocked at the expenses that followed.  We knew of the basic costs that come with pets like food, vet bills, and toys, but the cost for dog grooming surprised us.  For a basic cut, washing, and nail trim cost approximately $50 in our area!  After hearing this for the first time, we actually ended up leaving the groomer and headed to Target to buy a dog clipper and some shampoo.  2 years later, we still are cutting our dogs hair—each cut is a little less crappy than the last.

It does take time and patience to groom your animals, but I think it’s worth it in the long run.  It takes us about an hour to shave our dog, give her a bath, and cut her nails.  Depending on how far you are from your groomer, just driving your pet there and waiting and then driving home can take equally as long.  Other than time, the quality of your work is another reason most tend not to groom their own animals.  This took a little convincing with my wife, but I reminded her that our dog is a dog and a couple uneven hairs won’t bother her any and it shouldn’t bother us either.

After a couple years of trying, we have managed to get some sort of order to the process.  I recommend people at least give it a try, $50 every month or two, really adds up.  The total cost to us was $30 for the shaver (included all the different size blades and scissors), $5 for the shampoo, $13 for the nail clipper, and a couple bucks for treats to preoccupy her.  I have heard that cutting your animal’s hair from an early age can really help them grow accustomed to grooming, but in our experience, starting early didn’t work as good as ham!  Just tonight we gave our Maltese a trim—check out our work.  $

Awww what a cute dog!! She looks embarrassed by her new hairdo and won’t look at the camera. hahaha! But if it saves her mom and dad money to get her more treats, I’m sure she’ll forget her new haircut really quickly. :o )

We tried grooming our dog once – and we’ll never do it again. My wife actually cried afterwards because it looked so bad. This is one expense that some folks can cut out, but for us it’ll be one that we continue to pay. :)

I think she liked her new “do.” She sprinted around the house crazy for about 10 minutes after.

I get a kick out of those pictures people post when they shave their cat to look like a lion…leave the head fur and on the feet and tip of the tail. But i guess its kind of mean…
