recession

So you are job hunting…in a recession?  Believe it or not there is quite a selection of options that are in the category of being what everyone needs.  What are some things that everyone needs in a depressed economy like this one?  People have to eat and the global population is steadily increasing.  People will not be buying new cars they are going to be repairing their old ones.  Family veterinarians will also need to be accessible as family pets will never go by the way side.  We want you to keep these things in mind as you do searches to improve your chances of success.

  1. Education - When will teachers for math and science ever wane?  This country cannot afford to stop in the race with other countries in maintaining a foothold in the global knowledge base.  English as a second language is going to increase as well as immigrant levels rise.

  2. Energy - The Obama administration has put a new focus on the Earth’s environment and our impact on it.  Wind farms are increasing quite a but (especially in Texas) and new technologies in photovoltaics are advancing extremely fast.

  3. Environment - Speaking of which, green is the new way to go almost across the board.  Companies are revamping their policies to become more eco-friendly.  If nothing else, some pf these IPOs will probably be some great buys.

  4. Financial Services - There is a wide spread fire spreading of people needing assistance in getting their finances in order.  It might seem counterproductive that people would pay money to have that sort of thing done, but they must not be readers of this site: we’re free!

  5. Government - As you can see on our job board, Government positions, both state and federal, are hiring quite a bit.  Bear in mind that government pension and retirement plans are pretty powerful…Worth a look.  (More than half a million federal employees will retire by 2016 which will leave a huge hole in the work force.)

  6. Health Care - You don’t have to be a doctor or a nurse to get into this field, there are tons of positions available for administration jobs as well.  Again with Obama in the White House and stem cell research opened back up, there is a market in health care.

  7. International Business - Corporations, consulting firms and some governments are deep into looking after global markets which means you could be based over seas.  If you speak another language you might be a great candidate.  Does any one think the global economy is going to go anywhere but up?

  8. Law Enforcement - In any recession, crime has always gone up.  The need for crime prevention and anti-terrorism is high and with mainstream media pumping the filth all over our screens, its not going anywhere soon.

  9. Technology - Ah yes, one of my favorites.  New tech startups are able to gain awesome traction in a market like this due to the LILOs school of thought: Less In, Lots Out.  Tech companies are able to live off fumes more than ever and when formed and structured in this financial vacuum they are better able to last in the long run.  IT will also always be needed just about everywhere.

Why find a job while we can create a job?

This recession is starting to hit the health care sector too. There’s been a lot of nursing hiring freezes in my area, and I was laid off last year from my pharmacist job. There’s a LOT of uninsured/underinsured folks out there who can pay their exorbitant health care bills (who can?).

LUCKILY for me, I just started a new job with the government. So, I “think” I should have a better buffer from being laid off again… plus a great retirement plan.

Sorry.. “can’t” pay their exorbitant health care bills.

Sorry, but I have to disagree with you about IT. I went to school when they were attempting to funnel everyone into computer science or Management Information Systems promising all graduates a starting salary of 80,000.

Well…next thing you know, Silicon Valley folded and there were 10 programmers for every position. I agree there are things that people will always be willing to pay money for, but better tech is not one of them. Lilo or not, gizmos and gadgetry are not the toys of a recession.

Supposedly board game companies, however, are doing extremely well.

@ Brian: I think you might be right for the most part, but I think I meant it more as in a corporate setting, the IT guy isn’t (hopefully!) going to get axed as they are going to need those skills to keep things running smoothly. When the tech bubble burst, that saturation was a huge barrier to entry for sure.

New tech toys and hardware types of things are definitely getting hit hard nowadays.

@Mike: Do you know anything about those “free” programs they have at pharmacies? Or the ones where all the behind the counter meds are like $10? How does that work? Isn’t the Pharmacy losing money on subsidizing those drugs or are they the generic brands? Is there a difference if you get a generic brand anyway?

Well if you are in the process of creating a job, maybe you would like to supplement your income in your transition process?

There IS a difference in buying generic vs name brand at pharmacies (for me at least). My doctor recommended I get the generic brand because it was half the price of the name brand. Since I was a poor, just-out-of-college student, this sounded like a great idea! A few weeks after taking the medicine, I developed a horrible rash on my stomach/torso area. I asked the doctor what this was from, he said it was the generic brand medicine and it was pretty common. Let’s just say that since then, I haven’t bought generic brand medicine or gone back to that doctor.
