This is a guest post from Al Jacobs, who is the publisher of OnTheMoneyTrail.com.  His book is called Nobody’s Fool: A Skeptics Guide to Prosperity.

nobodys-fool-cover-aj

When economic times are good, you may be inclined to shop with little regard for price or value.  But when conditions turn sour it’s another story.  As your dollars must now be stretched longer and harder, you’d better spend each of them wisely.

What brand of watch do you wear?  Whether a top-of-the-line Rolex or an economy Timex, recognize both keep excellent time.  The current models all do a better job than the “precision” pocket watch your Great-grand-uncle Elmo used as a railroad engineer.  The only justification for a high-priced model is self-image and the illusion of prosperity.  These are both overrated.

jumpstartyoureconomy

The Money Life Network has organized another group project entitled “Jumpstart YOUR Economy: Tips for Starting The New Year Off Right,” and we have to say, that we are excited to write about it.  As of late, there has been enormous amount of activity in Washington DC regarding the economy, almost too much.  I can think of about 3 articles right off the top of my head that I want to write simply on the current events and the incredibly dark days ahead, but unfortunately, I also have a full time job in this field and time has been somewhat, shall we say….limited?

So we are going to try and convey a simple and important message that should compliment our compatriots’ articles (which you can find further down in this article).  This is an issue that many people talk about and never seem to get right…

Second Chance at 2008 Stimulus Check

If you didn’t receive your full rebate check a few months back, you may still be eligible to apply for the remainder of your stimulus if you made less in 2008 then in 2007.  The original stimulus checks were rushed out with the hopes of a magical boost to our ailing economy.  Because they were rushed out, the IRS used our 2007 return as a basis to determine the amount to send to each taxpayer.  However, the stimulus checks are actually tax credits for 2008, meaning you were  prepaid your credit.  So, you may be eligible to claim the remainder of your check if your income is under the following requirements.

Stimulus Package Includes Billions of Questionable Spending

The fate of the upcoming stimulus bill is still up in the air with Senate Republican’s being the major roadblock.  This is exactly why our democratic process is so genius.  I personally believe we need a stimulus bill to create jobs and improve not only our nation’s physical infrastructure, but our economical infrastructure as well. However, a stimulus bill must be exactly that, a stimulus and if the Republicans can successfully shed light on wasteful spending currently included in the House passed version of the stimulus bill, then everyone wins but special interests.   We cannot afford, nor should taxpayers be expected to fund  $246 million for Hollywood movie producers  or $110 million to the Farm Service Agency to upgrade their computer systems.  If a provision in the stimulus bill does not provide near-term jobs or needed relief to those who need it, it should be stricken from the legislation.

Below is a list of what the Senate Republicans feel should be taken out of the House passed bill; I tend to agree with most of it.  What are your thoughts?

Credit Card Companies Persecute Based on Where You Shop

American Express

I am pissed.  And you will be too when you hear this.  Instead of just lowering your credit score when you are late, they are lowering your score when you shop at places (with fine credit, mind you) at places where others shop that may have bad credit.  So you will be standing in line with your credit card, getting ready to pay for a usual item, and the person behind is ready to do the same and simply because their score is lower, yours is lowered as well.

Is that fair?  Can they really do that?  What?  WTF?  Really?  Whats going to happen now?  Are stores going to advterise that they only accept business with a certain credit score?  They might have to if you value your credit score.

Do You Snuggie?

I remember when I first saw the commercial for a snuggie—I laughed.  Now, today I read that over 4 million people have purchased them.  Really?  In case you have a quick trigger finger and you don’t sit through commercials, a snuggie is a fleece blanket that has arms, looks ugly, and is a waste of money.  (I can’t believe I just added the word “snuggie” to my Microsoft Word dictionary).

Who Is Richard Paul Evans?

five-lessons

There seems to be quite a bit of traffic lately, “Who is Richard Paul Evans?”  He is a successful author of a few self help books regarding the uber wealthy and has done it twice (the sequel is geared towards women).

The first book is called “Five Lessons a Multimillionaire Taught Me” and is about a family friend of his family who taught him how to become rich.  Ugh, I hate that connotation that it is easy…lets rephrase that:  He was taught how to manage money and the principles in which to make more of it successfully, leading to wealth.  Ah, there thats better.

So are these books really any good?  There are a few pros and cons that others have highlighted, and keep in mind that we have not read these yet and are looking at them objectively, just like you:

What Should You Do With Your Work Raises?

Although most of our raises fall below our expectations, we still expect and count on them.  Raises are a little different than surprise windfalls like bonuses and tax refund checks in the sense that the money is spread out over a years worth of paychecks.  This isn’t news to anybody, but the reaction to raise to windfalls is dramatic.  Usually, with a windfall we unload on expensive items, where raises we too get excited but basically live the same way.  With a little financial planning, you can milk the most of your raise, like your employer milks the most out of you!

List of Tax Deductions for 2008

Tax Day

Its one of the constants: taxes.  Where the other is death, most have a hard time choosing.  I found myself at a time agreeing with most that these are the worst times of the year.  But now I have a slightly different outlook.  I look at this time as an opportunity to lessen the harshness and try to optimize my money back.

I wanted to think of a good way to try and bring a better light to others about this confusing a complicated process.  The best way I knew, for now, was to gather a list of items that people may or may not know about with respect to getting the most out of what is on the chopping block from their wallets, due for Uncle Sam.

Everything Must Go, Including your Budget!

You have probably heard the news; Circuit City is closing all of their doors.  I smiled right along with Best Buy when I read the news, because like many, I thought I was in for some serious bargains.  I went the morning the news was released looking for discounts on some electronic items I have been eying for some time and mostly because I was just curious how low they would go with their prices.  To my surprise, the lines were huge, the discounts were mediocre at best, and people were spending like crazy.

Warning Signs That Your Debt Is Becoming Unmanageable

Do you have control over your debt or is your debt controlling you?  Many people don’t realize how serious their financial situation is until it is too late.  While avoiding debt completely may be an unreasonable goal since most people don’t have the resources to pay cash for their homes or automobiles, having a manageable debt load should not be beyond your reach.

Look at the following statements and ask yourself how they apply to you:

What it is In the New Stimulus Plan?

Stimulus Time Again!

Stimulus Time Again!

Negotiations have finally gotten to a point where details have been released of what will be included (debated) in a new stimulus package worth around $825 billion dollars over a two-year period.  More likely however, the bill will probably increase to over a $1 trillion.  Three Congressional committees are schedule to mark up the bill in the House, which means the final product will ultimately look considerably different than what has recently been proposed.  The ultimate goal for both Houses of Congress is to have the bill (in some form) passed by mid February.  It looks like individuals will be receiving some more money, but in the form of a tax cut…

Is Aisle19 a Scam or Legit?

Aisle19

“Here we go, its finally happening.”  This was my first thought when I recieved an email just a few minutes ago (from a coworker who is always on the look out for a new deal to make some money).  I thought this because it is somewhat an indicator that the economy must really be slumping.  Of course I knew all this but for it to permeate the way it has for this company to pop up and be successful, or at least sustainable, then you know its going to get worse.

So is Aisle19 a scam?  Is it safe?  How are they making money?
